This is a common question, and the answer is: it can sting a bit. When you get hit, you may feel a temporary sting that quickly fades. Unless you're in very close quarters, it's unlikely to leave more than a temporary red mark. Injuries in airsoft are more often caused by twisting ankles or falls rather than being hit by BBs.
Comparing pain levels between airsoft and paintball is subjective. Sometimes getting clipped by a paintball that doesn't burst can be more painful than a direct hit from an airsoft BB. On the other hand, a direct hit from an airsoft BB can hurt more than a direct hit from a paintball. The best advice is to try both and decide for yourself!
In essence, a BB is the ammunition used in an airsoft gun. Most airsoft sites in the UK allow BB weights ranging from 0.20g to 0.50g. It's important to check with your chosen site for any weight or FPS (feet per second) restrictions, as these can vary between different sites.
While it is extremely rare, it is possible for a BB with the right weight and velocity to break the skin and cause slight bleeding, especially in close-quarters combat. If you prefer to avoid this risk, you can choose to step out of the game temporarily. Remember, it's perfectly acceptable to prioritise your safety and well-being.
Like any hobby, accidents and injuries can occur, some of which can be serious and life-changing. Your health and safety should always be your top priority. Don't take any risks or compromise on safety equipment. Invest in high-quality airsoft-rated eye protection to safeguard your eyes. Additionally, consider protecting the rest of your face and teeth from potential harm caused by BBs. Be sure to use proper gear and follow safety guidelines.
Yes, it is legal to own an airsoft gun in the UK, but there are important legal requirements under the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 that you must understand before purchasing. You must be 18 or over to purchase any airsoft gun, and there are two main categories with different rules. For Realistic Imitation Firearms (RIFs) - which are realistic-looking airsoft guns - you need a valid defense to purchase them, with the most common being UKARA registration (United Kingdom Airsoft Retailers Association). To get UKARA registration, you must play at least 3 games over a minimum of 2 months at a registered airsoft site, and both retailers and private sellers are legally required to verify your defense before selling. Alternatively, you can purchase two-tone airsoft guns (painted in bright colors like orange, blue, or green) without needing any defense - anyone 18 or over can buy these.
Once legally purchased, there are no licensing, registration, or storage requirements for ownership, unlike real firearms. However, airsoft guns must comply with power limits: automatic weapons cannot exceed 1.3 joules (approximately 374 fps with 0.2g BBs), while semi-automatic and bolt-action rifles can be up to 2.5 joules (approximately 518 fps with 0.2g BBs). You can only use airsoft guns on private land with permission or at licensed airsoft sites, they must be transported in a gun bag or case, and cannot be used in public spaces or be visible in public. These same legal requirements apply whether you're buying new or second-hand from retailers or private sellers.
If you're new to airsoft, contact your local airsoft site about their membership procedures and how to begin the UKARA registration process, as most sites offer rental equipment for new players to try the sport before making any purchases.
To begin your airsoft journey, start by playing a few games with rental or borrowed gear from your preferred airsoft site. Once you've gained some experience and obtained your site membership, you can consider purchasing your own equipment. Remember, your number one priority is high-quality eye protection to safeguard your eyes. Good footwear is also essential for comfort and safety, whether you're playing indoors or outdoors. As for your first rifle, aim for a reliable mid-range option and avoid extremely cheap or overly expensive choices.
